Summary Statement

The Office of General Counsel strives to actively and effectively represent the Association and its affiliates' legal interests and to facilitate the efforts of staff and volunteers in fulfilling AARP's mission.  We provides legal guidance to the AARP Board of Directors and its committees and staff, the AARP Foundation Board of Directors and staff, AARP Services Board of Directors and staff, and the trustees of the AARP Group Health Insurance Program.


Responsibilities

Under the direct supervision of an attorney the Legal Intern may:

  • Perform legal review of education, engagement and advocacy materials, membership marketing, publications (online and print), and contest/sweepstakes promotions and research studies
  • Review, negotiate, and approve basic agreements, including leasing documents and license agreements
  • Perform trademark knock-out searches, collect specimen of use, track clearances and filings, and create trademark reports for internal clients.
  • Draft cease and desist letters in connection with brand protection and trademark enforcement program
  • Help manage regulatory filings related to state laws governing lobbying, campaign finance, and contests/sweepstakes, and charitable registrations
  • Conduct legal research and write memoranda in different issue areas. 

Requirements

Interns must be currently enrolled in an accredited law school; maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0; and plan to have completed at least one year of school prior to summer 2018.   

AARP also considers non-traditional interns who are looking to re-enter the workforce or change careers.  This may include those who have previously graduated college and are now enrolled in a continuing education program.
