The Community, State and National Affairs (CSNA) team is a key contributor to AARP's mission of social change for Americans 50+ and their families. CSNA drives social change through our advocacy work by giving our members a voice—at the federal, state, local levels and community levels—on issues important to them such as Financial Resilience, Health Security, and Personal Fulfillment. 

With a network of 53 offices in each state, the US Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia, we live where we work. This allows us to do what we do best…meet the people and directly engage in our communities to find out what they need and want, enabling us to educate our members with programs and information that is relevant to them.  

Our state offices work hand-in-glove with AARP’s national office in Washington, DC. This reach—from community to state to federal – enables CSNA to better empower people 50+ to enjoy the way they live and work today, while reaching their goals for tomorrow…their life – their way.  

Summary Statement

At AARP, we are the largest social mission organization in the country and you will learn from our talented Government Affairs team to develop strategy, data and advocate on behalf of our 38 Million members in the country.


You will provide assistance to the entire Campaigns team by:

1.) Producing analyses of political intelligence on AARP strategic issues including legislative, electoral and media trends.

2.) Analyzing the voting records and positions of key members of Congress and monitoring selected interest groups to leverage campaign effectiveness.

3.)  Assisting the members of the Campaign Management in developing tactics for issue campaigns and monitoring their effectiveness.

4.) Working with social media to support AARP issue campaigns.


You will work under the close supervision of Campaign management staff. Self-motivation and the ability to work independently as part of the team and collaboratively are required.  You will have opportunities to work closely with the Manager and other members of the Campaigns team as necessary, to support the goals of AARP Campaigns:

  1. You will prepare materials related to AARP’s multi-state campaigns by utilizing PowerPoint, Word documents, and Excel spreadsheets.
  2. Gather research and compile information and recommendations regarding priority advocacy issues. This could include online searches, reviewing publications, and accessing library materials.


The intern should have the ability to work under tight deadlines at times and be able to cope with a fast-paced environment.

Interns must be currently enrolled in a degreed program at an accredited college or university; maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0; and be considered rising undergraduate juniors or seniors.
