Summary Statement

This internship supports the policy development, integration and action in strategic areas across Health, Wealth and Self (e.g. Healthy Living (brain health), Caregiving, Work & Save). This position will conduct objective policy research both from domestic and international to identify the best ideas and practices in the areas of health security, financial resilience, and personal fulfillment to The work includes providing research, analyzing member/volunteer policy input, interpreting findings of research, writing draft reports, and assisting with the planning and development of meetings, as well as attending external meetings and conferences and reporting back on the issues.  


Duties of the intern will include and are not limited to the following:

  1. Provides research as needed across all issues areas;
  2. Provides general support to the OPDI team in the policy development process, production of written materials and conducting policy meetings and forums;
  3. Drafts and/or edits documents including policy reports, publications and other materials;
  4. Demonstrates “One AARP” cultural attributes and behaviors in all interactions.


Interns must be currently enrolled in a degreed program at an accredited college or university; maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0; and be considered rising undergraduate juniors or seniors.   AARP also considers non-traditional interns who are looking to re-enter the workforce or change careers.  This may include those who have previously graduated college and are now enrolled in a continuing education program. 

Requires analytical ability, good written and oral communication skills and attention to detail necessary to support the production of high quality documents.  Assist in the coordination of meetings involving high-level internal and external speakers. Must able to manage multiple assignments, exercise good judgment in diverse set of circumstances, and interact with appropriate level of professionalism with staff and volunteers.

  1. Ability to work somewhat independently and check-in for guidance as needed on assignments;
  2. Interact with staff and volunteers with appropriate level of professionalism and judgment.
