Summary Statement

AARP’s Corporate Strategy & Strategic Impact team is seeking a strong intern to join its Strategic Intelligence Department as a paid intern in summer, 2018.  In this internship you will build your resume while gaining first-hand knowledge of how the nation’s largest non-profit organization works, develops and conveys its programs and messages to 38 million members across the United States.  Corporate Strategy & Strategic Impacts defines the vision for AARP and aligns the organization around a common set of goals:

Desired Outcomes:

  1. A more defined vision of the future and a clearer understanding of what AARP is uniquely qualified to do;
  2. A simplified cross-enterprise process to prioritize activities, and drive decisions;
  3. A common set of strategic tools driving alignment across Enterprise Issues and Enablers;
  4. A more flexible and efficient process to allocate resources;
  5. A way to track progress that enables pivoting;

The Approach:

  1. Build a Forward-Looking Plan
    1. ES&I helps develop a plan that defines AARP’s long term strategy, and sets the priorities for the organization;
    2. Align on Common Goals;
    3. ES&I partners with Issue and Enabler leads, Finance and Operations to create enterprise goals and metrics that will help connect the dots between goals and activities;
  2. Prioritize and Sequence Activities
    1. ES&I partners with Enterprise Issue and Enabler leads to unearth critical opportunities—resulting in strategies and roadmaps that drive solutions;
  3. Drive to Decisions
    1. ES&I convenes the E-team to engage in deliberate and thoughtful conversations to assess progress, refine or pivot;


  • Define and drive strategic intelligence initiatives by tracking developments across external marketplaces that are relevant to AARP, including, Health-Wealth-Self;
  • Anticipate and evaluate opportunities and challenges posted by an continually evolving marketplace and develop context needed to inform AARP’s strategic thinking;
  • Analyze future trends and develop a point of view regarding key issues that have the potential impact on AARP, its partners and members;
  • Develop impartial insights by identifying and analyzing trends and topics relevant to AARP’s business model, strategic initiatives and future planning activities;
  • Develop expertise of the competitive landscape with the goal of providing external context and perspective regarding changing marketplace dynamics;
  • Provide strategic consultancy services for key strategic intelligence initiatives;
  • Work closely with staff in the Corporate Strategy and Strategic Impact team, as well as the larger Enterprise Strategy & Innovation department, to support the Senior Vice President and other departmental teams with timely marketplace insights, strategic thinking and relevant analysis;


Interns must be currently enrolled in a degreed graduate program at an accredited college or university and must maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0. AARP also considers non-traditional interns who are looking to re-enter the workforce or change careers.  This may include those who have previously graduated college and are now enrolled in a continuing education program.
