Summary Statement

The Grants Strategy & Communications Intern will be responsible for the creation and management of grants management website content, such as the development grantee 1-page impact profiles for print and web posting. The individual will gather information from grantees (directly or via surveys) to construct profiles which will live on AARP Foundation’s grants management webpage. In addition, the individual will gather necessary information and work with communications and technology teams to develop an online strategic planning tool and maintain a searchable grantee database and create compelling content for AARP Foundation’s grants webpage. 


The positions requires independent judgment and working across multiple departments within AARP Foundation and, on occasion, AARP. Duties will include and are not limited to the following: 

  • Communication and collaboration with various internal department staff and external programs;
  • Meetings with representatives of community organizations, foundations, and public agencies;
  • Grant making support, including reviewing applications and grantee reports, monitoring/tracking grants, capturing key information and drafting impact reports to be shared with funding partners;
  • Assist with preparation of written grant recommendations and other materials for docket(s) and special projects, as requested;
  • Provide general administrative and project management support.


Interns must be currently enrolled in a degreed program at an accredited college or university; maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0; and be considered raduate students, or post doctorate students.   

AARP also considers non-traditional interns who are looking to re-enter the workforce or change careers.  This may include those who have previously graduated college and are now enrolled in a continuing education program. 

It is important that the ideal candidate possess the following skills to succeed in this internship: 

  • Critical thinker;
  • Detail oriented/strong organizational skills;
  • Ability to synthesize information;
  • Ability to multi-task and juggle competing priorities;
  • Ability to work independently;
  • Research/writing experience;
  • Graphic/web design (preferred).
