State & Community Engagement (SCE) is part of Community, State and National Affairs (CSN). The SCE team includes: 53 states and territories across 6 regions with regional management, the Office of Volunteer Engagement, the Office of Community Engagement (including the National Retired Teachers Association (NRTA): AARP’s Educator Community), and the Legal Counsel for the Elderly (LCE).

Summary Statement

Serves as a member of the AARP New York State Office Team, based in New York City and responsible for the development and implementation of the Enterprise’s Enhanced Community Presence (ECP) work in New York City.  Effectively involve volunteers in all aspects of AARP’s work with community partners including external organizations, academic and business communities, policy makers, borough volunteer teams and chapters.  Works closely with Advocacy team members to develop and implement local, state, and federal advocacy as well working closely with our Communications and Marketing team members to identify and create innovative and engaging member experiences that advance AARP’s strategic priorities.

 


Responsibilities

1. Serves as a member of the state team in NY and is responsible for the development and implementation of AARP’s Enhanced Community Presence strategy in New York City as well as directing community engagement and outreach activities, local member offerings, recruiting, training, and organizing volunteers, and managing volunteer teams for participation in AARP’s strategic and legislative priorities. This includes the development and implementation of strategic plans and activities related to AARP NY priority issues, and integrated strategic planning activities and projects.

2. Expands awareness of AARP and its priorities among community and public policy leaders.  Identifies and positions AARP as a critical voice for age-eligible individuals, and also demonstrates relevance to all generations (i.e., decisions being made today can often most affect those 49 or younger).  Manages and coordinates opportunities with public speaking venues and other high profile venues, in collaboration with the Communications team.  Enhances AARP’s reputation among non-traditional partners, including community leaders, businesses, educators, and policy makers.  Initiates new relationships and sustains existing ones.

3. Works with staff and volunteers to develop AARP’s presence throughout New York City by strengthening visibility and awareness of AARP’s Brand, including planning and implementing a robust, innovative engagement and education strategy with activities that emphasize engaging volunteers and leaders.

4. Engages members, volunteers, and chapters in grassroots, community engagement, and policy maker relationship activities in support of the AARP state plan and New York City ECP work.  Organizes and maintains visible and effective coalitions and partnerships dealing with volunteer engagement, social impact, legislative, and member value strategic activities.  Makes presentations at workshops, forums and conferences, as appropriate.

5. Recruits, manages, and cultivates volunteer leaders and core borough volunteer teams that lend experience and expertise to the state team. Participates in training volunteers on priority issues, strategies, tactics, policies, relationship building, and state-specific political and communications processes.

6. Works in collaboration with New York State colleagues and national office staff to promote AARP’s strategic issues, priorities, programs, and activities.  As appropriate, facilitates interaction and communication with national office partners to request technical assistance and ensure that the proper resources are available for staff and volunteers, including issue material, talking points, updates, and briefing materials as it relates to New York City’s ECP work.

7. Uses data-driven analytics and AARP tools to target audiences and track results.

8. Manages budgets related to specific job duties within the state plan.

9. Demonstrates AARP Leadership Behaviors in all interactions.

 


Requirements

Completion of a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science, Human Resources, and/or Non-Profit Management, Social or Human Sciences, Marketing and Public Relations, or a related discipline and a minimum of 5+ years of experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience related to the duties of the position.  Travel up to 50%. Night and weekend hours as required to meet state office needs.
Demonstrates the following strengths: 
• Understanding of community organizing, communications, marketing and public relations.
• Strong social media and writing skills and the ability to tell a cohesive story through visual elements; and familiarity with new media platforms.
• Familiarity of New York City business, entertainment and community service environment (e.g., community service leaders, non-profit organizations, critical city-wide community service needs, business leaders.) is a plus.  
• Ability to handle multiple issues and projects in a matrix team approach, requiring significant consultation and collaboration with colleagues.
• The ability to evaluate, analyze and adjust strategies and tactics in an ongoing, fast paced environment.
