State & Community Engagement (SCE) is part of Community, State and National Affairs (CSN). The SCE team includes: 53 states and territories across 6 regions with regional management, the Office of Volunteer Engagement, the Office of Community Engagement (including the National Retired Teachers Association (NRTA): AARP’s Educator Community), and the Legal Counsel for the Elderly (LCE).

Summary Statement

Contributes to the achievement of strategic priorities by providing professional level coordination for state and community operations, communications, or advocacy and by providing technical assistance to staff and volunteers.  Manages projects, creates project-related materials, and determines resources necessary to complete projects.  Makes presentations, keeps records, prepares reports, and drafts technical correspondence.  Conducts research on legislative issues and coordinates grassroots organizing.

 


Responsibilities

1. Serves as a member of the state team and contributes to the development and implementation of AARP’s presence in communities. Works in collaboration with community agencies, non-profit organizations and the business community.  Maintains existing partnerships and initiates new relationships. Organizes and maintains effective statewide coalitions and partnerships dealing with strategic issues. 

2. Trains volunteers on priority issues, strategies, tactics, policies and state specific political and communications processes.  Ensures that proper resources are available to volunteers, including issue material, talking points, updates and briefing materials.  Works to fully engage volunteers in community outreach, communications and advocacy activities as they relate to the state plan.  Conducts volunteer recognition activities and events.

3. Assists with the development and implementation of communications strategies.  Performs communications functions, including basic promotion of AARP, news releases, media advisories, assistance with advocacy campaigns, webplace and newsletter coordination.  Uses media to inform the public on issues of concern to AARP.  Makes presentations at workshops and conferences as appropriate.

4. Works to engage members, volunteers, and chapters in grassroots, community outreach and policy maker relationship activities in support of the AARP state plan.  

5. Represents AARP before law and policy makers and those who promulgate rules and regulations in the state.  Engages volunteers in direct advocacy activities.  Assists with the development and coordination of grassroots mobilization efforts for the purpose of influencing policy makers and demonstrating support of AARP priorities.  

6. Develops and implements projects/events/activities that advance AARP’s strategic priorities. Manages projects/events/activities within an assigned budget.  Works closely with staff from the national office as well as community partners to achieve a successful project, event, or activity outcome.

 


Requirements

-Completion of a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science, Human Resources, and/or Non-Profit Management, Social or Human Sciences, or a related discipline and 3+ years of experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience related to the duties of the position.  Demonstrates an understanding of the state’s political and human services environment.
-Bilingual skills may be required for specific assignments based on the needs of the membership segment supported.
-Travel required up to 50% of work time.
