Summary Statement

The Nebraska State Office of AARP is looking for an intern to join its busy team as an Advocacy and Communications Intern. The Student Intern will have the opportunity to see the real world of advocating for change, empowering volunteers to be leaders and working collectively as a team.



Responsibilities

Key responsibilities of the student intern are to:

 

  1. Work with the Associate State Director for Communications and the State Director in supporting state plan activities including state legislative issues, AARP Fraud Watch, Senior Hunger program, rural community engagement and member events;
  2. Develop in-depth knowledge and compile information on AARP priority issues;
  3. Help arrange and coordinate speaking engagements for AARP Fraud Watch and/or AARP SNAP volunteers; assist volunteers with logistics and planning as needed; track results of their speaking engagements; compile and send a regular Fraud Watch email update to volunteers; provide resources and publications for volunteer activities; assist the ASD for Communications with outreach to community partners in planning joint fraud events;
  4. Assist with state office communications via social media and the web. Prepare blogs for the web page and posts for Facebook and Twitter;                                              
  5. Prepare weekly volunteer newsletter for volunteers including requesting articles from staff and drafting articles;
  6. Work closely with AARP staff and volunteers in providing support for State Plan events;
  7. Assist with event planning and management;

In addition the intern will assist with the following tasks:

  1. Develop in-depth knowledge of issues; gather information and research topics; practice developing presentations and talking points.
  2. Assist in volunteer coordination and will have a major role in assigning and coordinating work with volunteers. He/she will be heavily engaged with volunteers involved at AARP events and interacting with members and public at public forums.
  3. Interact with most frequently: all volunteers across Nebraska and potential sites for speaking engagements and have some interaction with public/members that may be seeking information on AARP.
  4. Perform tasks that are explained in advance with an opportunity for hands on instruction when needed.
  5. Work on assorted projects that are scheduled throughout the year with an opportunity for the intern to experience many different aspects of work ranging from meetings, listening sessions, public events, varied communication with volunteers/members, and event preparation.
  6. Other duties as assigned.


Requirements

Interns must be currently enrolled in a degreed program at an accredited college or university; maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0; and be considered rising undergraduate juniors or seniors, graduate students, or post doctorate students.   

AARP also considers non-traditional interns who are looking to re-enter the workforce or change careers.  This may include those who have previously graduated college and are now enrolled in a continuing education program.
