Summary Statement

AARP Illinois is looking for a Communications Intern to join our team in downtown Chicago, Illinois.


Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Communications Manager the Intern will be responsible for assisting with everyday tasks of the communications team. The intern will also have a long term project to work on which will leave a lasting impact and strengthen the work of the communications team.

Primary responsibilities include:

  • Monitoring, tracking and evaluating the effectiveness of Social Media content across multiple channels for metrics of Activity, Reach, and Engagement.
  • Exploring new opportunities for AARP to represent ourselves on emerging Social media channels – assist with replying to incoming inquiries on Social Media channels, and provide content such as photos, videos, or blog posts covering the work of AARP Illinois.
  • Assisting with everyday tasks of the communications team as needed.
  • Assisting with media relations tasks, including pitching news releases and other content to reporters and media outlets.
  • Assisting with drafting of internal and external communications including, but not limited to, the Illinois Advocacy Newsletter, Letters to the Editor, press releases, Op-Eds, etc.

Requirements

Interns must be currently enrolled in a degreed program at an accredited college or university; maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0; and be considered rising first or second year graduate students.

Additional requirements include:

  • The ability to work independently as well as collaboratively, exercise initiative, maintain a positive attitude.
  • Availability to work a minimum 20 hours a week at our downtown Chicago office.
  • Proficiancy with Microsoft applications, Publisher, Adobe, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Pinterest, and Instagram.
