Summary Statement

AARP California has an opening for a paid internship in our San Jose Office.


This internship position will assist our Advocacy and Community Engagement strategies and agenda, focusing on housing, which includes:

  • Building awareness of AARP’s Advocacy and Community Engagement work through coordination of activities and project management
  • Engaging with community stakeholders, organizations, and elected officials
  • Supporting volunteers and partner organizations
  • Working on national and grassroots campaigns and initiatives
  • Researching and sharing possible solutions to the housing crisis in Silicon Valley
  • Convening and engaging public officials, community organizations, and coalitions to advance state and local advocacy issues pertaining to housing
  • Researching issues on state and local initiatives related to housing
  • Developing materials and writing reports (ie: infographics, fact sheets, PowerPoints, etc.)



The ideal candidate will be a rising junior or senior pursuing a degree in public policy, urban planning, city planning, environmental science or related fields. Must have reliable transportation and available 20 to 25 hours a week.

Intern must be currently enrolled in an accredited college or university with a minimum GPA of 3.0.

Additional requirements include:

  • Ability to work independently and manage time effectively
  • Able to handle multiple projects
  • Team and detail oriented
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Enthusiasm about housing, urban development, and planning issues in Silicon Valley
  • Event planning experience a plus.
  • Intermediate to advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office, Social Media Platforms (Twitter and Facebook)
