Summary Statement

The Data and Technology Advisor has primary responsibility for the design and implementation of a 3 to 5-year technology strategy—a critical function central to the ability of EC to improve practice, report results to stakeholders, and grow. The Advisor will integrate and deploy a wide array of technological solutions to issues impacting growth and efficient, accurate data capture and reporting.  The position advises on and oversees the capture and use of programmatic data for the purposes of continuously improving AARP Foundation Experience Corps programs and operations, demonstrating program effectiveness, meeting accountability requirements, and building the field. The position requires independent judgement in selecting methods and techniques for technology based solutions within accepted policies and practices, requiring minimal guidance.  The position serves as advisor to the national office staff, local program staff, and volunteer network on all things related to technology, data collection and reporting. Ability to multi-task and prioritize critical work. 


The Data and Technology Advisor has lead responsibility for the planning, implementation, management and effectiveness of a network-wide technology strategy for the AARP Foundation Experience Corps program. The technology strategy goals are to (1) enhance and advise the national office growth strategy with technological solutions that improve outreach and efficiency, (2) implement more efficient and accurate technologies for local programs for data collection and reporting, use of the New Volunteer Portal (NVP, a Salesforce-based data system), and tracking compliance with the EC standards, and (3) reduce time spent by volunteers and program staff on reporting and recordkeeping while improving accuracy and access to/use of technology. The Advisor facilitates workgroups and seeks input from stakeholders on issues inhibiting growth that may be solved with technological solutions and leads the design and development process for new technologies to facilitate growth. This is a full-time exempt position that reports to the Director of Education and Evaluation. Major functions of this position include:


  • With the Director, Education and Evaluation, develop a three to five-year technology strategy that achieves objectives for growth, data collection and reporting, and volunteer engagement
  • Implement the AARP Foundation Experience Corps technology strategic plan, creating and implementing strategies, objectives and action plans
  • Advise on technological solutions for streamlining and systems for new program applications and compliance with EC national standards
  • Strengthen the EC network’s capacity to manage and use data
  • Participate in the design and spearhead the execution and adoption of a national office policy for safe handling of student data.
  • Advise the AARP Experience Corps national office staff as well as staff at branches and affiliate organizations on data capture best practices to ensure proper use of data tools across EC network
  • Evaluate preparedness and develop strategies for branches and affiliates to engage volunteers in using data collection technology
  • Design and provide training resources and provide ongoing technical support to national office, branch, and affiliate staff
  • Identify improved methods for collecting and tracking data within Experience Corps
  • Mentor national staff to improve organizational understanding of data systems
  • Represent EC on the NVP business products counsel informing the work of the task force and making decisions on behalf of AARP Experience Corps, including those related to the learning management system
  • Initiate and build strategic partnerships within and outside of AARP with groups involved in technological solutions for data collection and maintenance.
  • Work collaboratively with the EC national office as well as Foundation IT, Grants Management, Finance, Resource Development and Communications to ensure the integrity of the data collection, reporting and management systems and provide reports and information in support of the work of Experience Corps.


• Five (5) years of technology project management experience, preferably in rolling out case management software across multiple sites and/or affiliates.

• Experience using Salesforce applications – Salesforce Administrator/Developer certification preferred.

• Ability to translate business needs into appropriate functional specifications.

• Ability to bridge communication between non-technical user-base and technical development needs.

• Familiarity with and interest in knowledge management concepts.

• Interest in trends and developments within the technology industry and a passion for the potential of technology tools to transform the work of the nonprofit sector.

• Ability to learn quickly through accessing a variety of resources, such as existing documentation and online resources.

• Excellent interpersonal and verbal/written communication skills and exceptional attention to detail.

• Demonstrate an interest in the vision and mission of AARP Foundation Experience Corps
