Summary Statement

This position performs complex reporting and analysis. The position is responsible for developing, communicating and ensuring implementation of policies and procedures and is required to have a good understanding not only of the functional areas of finance, strategy and innovation  risk management and grants management, but also of the Foundation’s overall vision, mission and three year and annual plans. This position requires creative solutions and effective communication in an often challenging environment. This position requires understanding of the connections between the Foundation and AARP. Works directly with others throughout the Foundation, AARP Financial Services, and other AARP units to ensure that work is done appropriately and that deliverables are met.   The nature of this position’s interaction with the staff outside of the Department is informative, coordinative and advisory in nature:


The Financial Grants Advisor ensures all grants received (primarily federal in origin, in addition to other government grants and private grants) meet the financial requirements as stated in the grant agreements and relevant regulatory requirements. The position requires deep understanding of 2 CFR 200 uniform guidance and will be required to quickly master specific terms and conditions for federal grants from such agencies as Department of Agriculture, Department of Justice, Corporation for National and Community Services and others. As the lead financial grant analyst, the position will be considered a subject matter expert for federal financial guidelines with regards to grants and subgrants. In addition, the position may assist with non-financial grant compliance as needed.Primary responsibility with be financial and payment review and preparation.

For federal grants, this would include:

  • Review of all subgrantee financial reports (occurring monthly and quarterly).
  • Coordination of approval of subgrantee financial reports (separate approvals from program, finance and grants management).
  • Payment requests to A/P for subgrantees.
  • Coordination of federal financial report (FFRs) submissions (all government grants except SCSEP and Tax-Aide).
  • Quarterly state grant reports (Serve DC and GOSV).
  • Monitoring AARP Foundation budget-to-actual reviews.


For private grants made, this would include:

  • Review all grantee financial reports.
  • Coordination of approval of grantee financial reports (separate approvals from program, finance and grants management).
  • Payment request to A/P for grantees.


For private grants received, this would include:

  • Drafting and coordinating approval of private grant financial reports (e.g., RWJF).


The position will also:

  • Coordinate financial responsibilities closely with AARP Foundation Finance team.
  • Be the primary liaison to AARP accounting and A/P teams.
  • Perform financial desk reviews of subgrantees, under the leadership of the Compliance and Monitoring Manager.
  • Develop financial grant management training and provide technical assistance to federal subgrantees.
  • Be the primary liaison with federal subgrantees’ financial departments.
  • Generate appropriate financial reports in tracking spending status of grants against approved budgets.
  • Identifies opportunities for improvement and greater efficiencies in assigned work and other processes and procedures.
  • Demonstrates OneAARP attributes and behaviors in all interactions.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.



  • 8 years related experience.
  • BS or BA degree required.
  • Familiarity with Federal cost principles and Uniform Guidance.
  • Excellent business, analytical and process skills are required.
  • Must have strong organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to produce quality reports and manage data with accuracy.
  • Knowledge of advanced Microsoft Excel is required.
  • Experience working in financial reporting platforms (e.g., PeopleSoft) is required.
  • Creativity, flexibility, a proactive problem-solving approach, and strong relationship-building skills are essential to success in this position.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze data, prepare concise report summaries and provide sound recommendations
  • Requires the ability to work effectively with others to gain respect, foster understanding of related issues and build support for organizational goals.  Able to effectively participate in cross-functional teams to meet business objectives and influence co-workers and business partners.
  • Ability to successfully manage multiple projects and clients.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality with all financial and other matters.
  • Excellent written, verbal, visual/presentation and interpersonal communications skills. 
  • Adept at conveying complex financial concepts and analyses to non-financial management and staff.
  • Team player, dedicated to excellent customer service for internal and external customers.



  • Graduate degree in relevant subject (business, finance, accounting, public health, policy, etc.) desired.
  • Accounting, auditing or compliance experience is a plus.
  • Ability to adapt to AARP Foundation’s organizational culture.
  • Is not afraid to ask questions and work through complex answers.
