Financial and Operational Services (FOS) manages AARP's multi-year financial planning, budgeting and forecasting; treasury and investments; tax reporting and planning; and accounting and financial reporting activities. The division provides project management and training and support for the systems used to manage AARP’s money and assets. 

Summary Statement

  • As a member of the FP&A team, the incumbent will provide ongoing financial and business analysis and support for all levels of management within AARP’s Capital Asset Planning Category Owners. Performs financial analysis and reporting duties, including creation, review, and quality control of financial reports, review, and quality control of internal and external financial and operational reporting (system generated and ad hoc).
  • Responsible for coordinating the annual budget, quarterly forecast, and monthly financial results analysis processes across multiple lines of business responsible within the Capital Planning process to include AARP, ASI and the Foundation.
  • Develop, build, and maintain complex financial models.  Analyze financial statements and related data; develop executive-level presentations to inform and support both short term and long term planning efforts across the Association.
  • Responsible for supporting the internal Quarterly Operations Reviews process for the business, an analytical assessment of AARP’s business unit’s qualitative and quantitative performance.  Significant focus on financial and operational metrics and KPIs.
  • Provide ad-hoc financial analysis as required by the business unit.
  • Performs complex/advanced general ledger accounting, financial reporting and analysis duties, including creation, review, and quality control of financial statements reports.
  • Monitors the chart of accounts structure and related financial reporting formats.  


  • Provide direct financial planning and analysis support (forecast, multi-year plans), as well as develops and maintains numerous spreadsheets, and other data sources used in financial forecasting an project management.  

  •  Manages monthly business unit budget / forecast variance reports, review purchase orders, identify and communicate details related to any variance issues; meet with business unit managers, discuss variances, and document / communicate related risks or opportunities. 

  • Develops complicated forms, reports, and ad hoc analytics within Hyperion Planning, Hyperion Financial Reporting, and Smart View.  Is trained extensively on all aspects of Hyperion Planning and People Soft Asset Management.

  • Partners with business group leaders, operations staff, accounting, and other FP&A staff to coordinate the timely completion of the annual budget process, quarterly forecasts, multi-year plans, monthly financial close, and other ad-hoc analysis projects.

  • Manage and develop critical relationships across key functional areas within the organization and interacts with all levels of leadership as a resource in matters of capital planning, budgeting and cost/revenue analysis. Must be comfortable working directly with Executives and Leadership Team members.

  • Additional financial modeling expertise, reporting, analytics, and ownership in the following key areas.  Financial modeling will be heavily based on Hyperion, PeopleSoft, and Oracle Business Intelligence data:

  • Project Management

  • Monthly operational and financial variance analysis

  • Financial trend analysis and forecast accuracy improvement

  • Manage and execute special projects, ad hoc analysis, and other duties, as assigned.

  • Prioritize projects and assignments efficiently and effectively.  Uses business, technical, and educational experience to correctly evaluate the analytical output of others.  Completes assignments in a timely manner, often while completing multiple projects with competing priorities.

  • Requires minimal direction and makes decisions independently.

  • In depth knowledge in job-related areas of expertise.

  • Prepares and/or reviews accounting entries to record recurring and special transactions relating to the revenue, costs, and expenses for organizational unit(s).

  • Performs monthly, quarterly, and annual analyses and reconciliations of balance sheet and expense general ledger accounts, as assigned and maintains the completeness and accuracy of all related account balances in accordance with GAAP.

  • Supports the monthly financial reporting for the business unit(s) supported and/or for AARP consolidated.  Assists in the preparation of the annual external audit.


  • Completion of a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related discipline (advanced degree in Finance, MBA and/or CPA highly preferred) 

  • 7+ years of directly related experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience related to the duties of the position.  Requires experience in financial planning, project planning, budgeting, capital budgeting, forecasting, business analysis, and modeling.  Excellent oral, written, influence, and interpersonal skills required.

  • Technical competencies include Financial Planning software tools such Hyperion, Essbase, Oracle Business Intelligence, and PeopleSoft.  Must be an advanced user with Microsoft Office applications, specifically Excel and PowerPoint.

  • Position requires a good depth and breadth of FP&A, Accounting, and excel modeling expertise and is a key component to making our financial plans come together in a timely, consistent and meaningful fashion.  Position influences every aspect of our financial infrastructure and supports our early warning system to identify and mitigate significant financial risks. Position acts in an advisory role to key business unit leaders to help link operational results to financial results.
