Integrated Communications is a multimedia, service-focused communications operation that leads in shaping the impression of AARP by providing communications planning, support and execution for AARP’s strategic business units.

Summary Statement

AARP, the nonprofit, nonpartisan organization that helps people turn their goals and dreams into Real Possibilities, is looking for a dynamic public relations professional to provide senior-level planning and supervision for various aspects of the organization’s media relations work. The Vice President will be a highly visible member of the Media Relations team leading campaign development for key enterprise priorities, providing strategic guidance for internal partners, and supporting the Senior Vice President in the day-to-day management of operational functions. As a vital member of AARP’s Media Relations team, the Vice President will also serve as a senior liaison for multiple external agency/vendor contacts.



More broadly, the Vice President will develop and lead innovative public relations strategies and campaigns that generate positive earned print, broadcast and online media coverage of AARP enterprise priorities in new and creative ways. This professional must also effectively ameliorate reputational risks to the AARP brand by curtailing negative press coverage.

The successful candidate must have demonstrated experience providing leadership and management oversight for large public relations teams. Finally, the Vice President will support the Senior Vice President in managing the daily operations of the Media Relations department.

Other responsibilities include:

  • Maintaining an in-depth knowledge of AARP’s enterprise-wide strategic goals, anticipating and addressing opportunities and issues as they arise.
  • Leading the Media Relations teams responsible for promoting multiple organizational priorities, AARP media properties and events.
  • Overseeing the development of earned media strategy for AARP affiliates including AARP Foundation, AARP Services Inc. and Influent50 to ensure consistency and raise awareness of products and services.
  • Developing and managing public relations RFPs; directing the work of external agencies and consultants.
  • Working with the Senior Vice President to implement departmental policies and procedures.
  • Managing day-to-day administrative functions including budget forecasting, vendor procurement and strategic planning.
  • Serving as a senior media relations contact for internal business units and states offices.
  • Working with Executive Positioning, Brand and Editorial teams to negotiate and develop media partnerships.


  • Completion of a Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, Political Science or a related discipline. Completion of Master’s degree or postgraduate work preferred;
  • Preferred 15+ years’ experience as a communications and media relations professional;
  • Experience working with a mission driven, advocacy organization;
  • Previous public relations agency experience or the equivalent within a major corporation or organization;
  • Ability to work effectively and calmly in a fast-paced, diverse, high-pressure environment;
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain successful relationships with national, regional and local media;
  • Ability to provide leadership, strategic focus and management oversight for media outreach across platforms;
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to motivate team members and colleagues;
  • Demonstrated success in marketing, communications, legislative or campaign-related grassroots development, public affairs, public relations or branding.
