Integrated Communications & Marketing is a multimedia, service-focused communications & marketing operation that leads in shaping the impression of AARP by providing communications planning, marketing, support and execution for AARP’s strategic business units. 



Summary Statement

Act as Enterprise interface to the (Hollywood) entertainment industry. Oversees and directs multifaceted interactions between AARP, industry leaders, entertainers, key dignitaries and representatives.



Responsibilities

  • Manage and integrate long and short-term entertainment strategies across the enterprise.,
  • Oversee negotiations, communications and commitments with celebrities on behalf of AARP, including but not limited to; booking covers for AARP The Magazine, wrangling A-level stars and notables for AARP events, (including the Movies for Grownups annual gala).
  • Act as advisor to Brand and Membership regarding the use of celebrities as part of Enterprise outreach programs.
  • Innovate, conceptualize, create and implement new entertainment ventures.
  • Grow the Movies for Grownup (MFG) franchise (annual event/gala and local venues/events).
  • Maintain close contacts with film industry studios and distributors to keep abreast of appropriate "Movies for Grownups" and talent for the purposes of innovating and growing the franchise.
  • Collaborate and partner with the Promotions staff to grow and expand the reach of the Movies for Grownups franchise by partnering with entertainment publications such as "Variety", creating a Movies for Grownups AARP membership, and offering screenings and movie content to members through the 53 state offices. Coordinate with new TV For Grownups franchise now in the planning stages.
  • Maintain and grow contacts as a Hollywood entertainment insider and bring content to AARP
  • publications as well as talent and films for AARP events (including but not limited to the MFG annual film festival and a growing number of smaller regional film festivals).
  • Write for AARP The Magazine and other AARP channels as required, articles of varying lengths, from feature and cover stories to departments, sidebars and online posts. Bring in-talented new writers, and edit content as feasible (especially magazine cover stories).
  • Work with AARP Foundation Leadership (Lisa Ryerson) to further establish the visibility of the Foundation's work among entertainment industry members. Assist with securing celebrities for the gala honorary benefit committee and reach out to celebrities for possible foundation work, including (but not limited to) the recording of PSAs.
  • ***Travel to DC and NY as required for staff meetings (no more than once a month) or an assignment for ATM cover stories. Attend cover shoots, as required.***


Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in journalism, English, communications or related discipline.
  • 15+ years experience as a top editor for a national newspaper or magazine with aspecialization in the entertainment field.
  • Deep and wide contacts in the entertainment field that can be leveraged for AARP's goals.
  • A proven ability to work cooperatively across media platforms and within a large organization to create synergies and expand the ability of the parent organization to speak with one voice.
  • Strong grounding in all aspects of journalism and a proven track record developing stories and top-editing copy.
  • Excellent news judgment and extensive knowledge of aging issues; excellent writing, editing,communication and managerial skills.
  • A strong leader and team player with the demonstrated ability to build strong relationships with other AARP departments.
