Summary Statement

The AARP Illinois State Office is offering a paid communications internship for students wanting to gain professional or educational experience through hands-on training at our very busy state office. 



Responsibilities

The AARP Illinois State Office is offering a paid communications internship in summer, 2017, for students wanting to gain professional or educational experience through hands-on training at our very busy state office.  You will have an opportunity to apply your academic learnings in a professional setting, directed by our professional staff, while learning about issues of importance to our members who are 50+.

Under the supervision of the Communications Manager, the Intern would be responsible for assisting with everyday tasks of the communications team. The intern will also have a long term project to work on which will leave a lasting impact and strengthen the work of the communications team.

  • Monitoring, tracking and evaluating the effectiveness of Social Media content across multiple channels for metrics of Activity, Reach, and Engagement;
  • Explore new opportunities for AARP to represent ourselves on emerging Social media channels – assist with replying to incoming inquiries on Social Media channels, and provide content such as photos, videos, or blog posts covering the work of AARP Illinois;
  • Assist with everyday tasks of the communications team as needed;
  • Assist with media relations tasks, including pitching news releases and other content to reporters and media outlets;
  • Assist with drafting of internal and external communications including, but not limited to, the Illinois Advocacy Newsletter, Letters to the Editor, press releases, Op-Eds.

Ideally the intern would also provide value to the communications team by teaching us skills we may not already have in the digital realm such as ability to code or build html websites and custom Facebook applications.

 



Requirements

Interns must be currently enrolled in a degreed program at an accredited college or university; maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0; and be considered rising undergraduate juniors.

AARP also considers non-traditional interns who are looking to re-enter the workforce or change careers.  This may include those who have previously graduated college and are now enrolled in a continuing education program.
