Integrated Communications & Marketing is a multimedia, service-focused communications and marketing operation that leads in shaping the impression of AARP by providing communications planning, marketing, support and execution for AARP’s strategic business units.

Summary Statement

The Sr. Staff Writer/Editor/Producer is primarily responsible for writing speeches and developing talking points for use by executives, board members, and broad communications by AARP that reflect the views, priorities and positions of AARP.  The Sr. SW-E-P is secondarily responsible for editing and/or contributing written content for use in AARP print and online platforms that appeals to the AARP target audience in order to support the production of high quality publications and an outstanding website. 


  • Writes speeches expressing AARP views, priorities and positions for E-Team, Board Members, and other executive level representatives of AARP.
  • Creates talking points on AARP views, priorities, and positions to be used for Integrated Communications and Marketing (ICM) communications.
  • Writes or edits news and features expressing AARP views, priorities, and positions for AARP publications and online platforms.
  • Writes news and features of general journalistic interest for AARP publications and online platforms.
  • Writes opeds for major newspapers.
  • Writes features expressing AARPs views, priorities and positions for community newspapers.
  • When necessary writes/contributes content for books focused on communicating AARP views, priorities and positions.
  • Develops and maintains deep knowledge of AARP and its top priorities and goals.
  • Maintains internal and external networking and contacts and deep knowledge of AARP organization, priorities and history and utilizes those contacts and knowledge effectively to contribute to publishing and online content as needed.
  • Keeps knowledgeable about changing best practices in print and online content. 
  • Collaborates to creatively and enthusiastically brainstorm unique ideas to build print and online inventory.
  • Works effectively with other members of writer-editor-producer team and with appropriate platform leads such as Deputy Editor of publications, managing editor of digital platform.
  • Demonstrates AARP Leadership behaviors in all interactions by developing strong relationship with other departments across the enterprise to accomplish AARP goals.


  • Bachelor degree in Journalism, English, or Communications.  Masters’ degree desirable.
  • 7+ year experience in journalism and/or speechwriting,
  • Great knowledge of AARP organization, priorities and history.
  • Demonstrated excellence in speechwriting skills and journalistic skills.
  • Able to work collaboratively, closely and effectively with executive team and board members.
  • Has extensive internal and external networking and contacts.
  • Demonstrated ability to write about complex subjects in effective and appealing ways.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle appropriate work load efficiently and effectively and manage assignments, meet deadlines and contribute creative ideas to writer-editor-producer team
