Integrated Communications & Marketing is a multimedia, service-focused communications and marketing operation that leads in shaping the impression of AARP by providing communications planning, marketing, support and execution for AARP’s strategic business units. 

Summary Statement

Under the direction of the Editor in Chief and in close collaboration with the Executive Editors the Senior Editor creates world-class content in multiple platforms that is “must reading” for the AARP readership. The Senior Editor must be adept at idea generation, story selection, line-editing, headline writing and creative packaging, along with knowledge of all appropriate software. The Senior Editor must also develop strong working relationships with other departments in Integrated Communications and Marketing (ICM) to learn about and promote important association initiatives and strengthen the impact of AARP The Magazine (ATM) and AARP. The Senior Editor must also demonstrate awareness of AARP’s mission and goals and exhibit appropriate behaviors.


The Senior Editor is responsible for the assigning and editing of original content—from special issues to features to sidebars— working with a stable of freelance authors as well as AARP content providers. The Senior Editor will create content with the potential for multi-platform and multi-version use but with an emphasis on ATM’s needs first.




  • Bachelor’s degree in English, Journalism, Communications or related field.
  • 10+ years as a managing or deputy editor, or relevant management role, in magazines publishing.
  • Strong background in journalism -- writing, editing, verbal, analytical, project management and presentation skills – and a proven record of developing stories and storytelling.
  • Exceptional attention to detail, ability to prioritize and multi-task while driving results
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision while contributing to the organization’s goals and objectives.
  • Team player with strong listening and follow-through skills.
  • Well-developed editing and writing skills
  • Strong knowledge of multimedia
  • Experience with meeting deadlines
